SHELL (THE END) by Bruno Rousseaud
SHELL
Through a transformation into ceramic, Bruno Rousseaud domesticates the shell, capturing a frozen moment of nature. A moment when everything stops. The shell is punctuated by an array of holes able to hold flowers for remembrance and form the sentence in Braille; THE END.
THE END
For a racing driver, the helmet is his most defining object. It is an extension of himself and his personality. The act of hanging up the helmet signifies the end of his career. The helmet becomes the emblem he leaves behind if death strikes him in the middle of a race. The mythology of the racing driver is made up of speed, risk, and danger. The helmet is a bulwark against this chaos.
The wall-hanging piece presented here pays homage to both symbols, combining the fragility and obsolescence of a protective object that, through an act of violence and chance, is both a simple shell and commemorative shrine.
